""A winner: tense and terrifying with a twist you'll never see coming. You won't soon forget these characters and the shocking ways their lives intersect."" — Laura Dave, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me

Every marriage has its secrets....

Skyla lives alone in the shadow of the defunct drive-in movie theater that she and her husband ran for nearly fifty years. Ever since Hollis's death in a freak accident the year before, Skyla spends her nights ruminating about the regrets and deceptions in her long marriage. That is, until she rents a cottage on the property to a charming British man, Teddy Cornwell....

A thousand miles away, Linelle is about to turn fifty. Bored by her spouse and fired from her job when a questionable photo from her youth surfaces on social media, her only source of joy is an on-line affair with her very first love, a man she's not seen in nearly thirty years, Teddy Cornwell...

While in New York City, Jeremy, a failed and bitter writer, accepts an assignment to review a new restaurant in Providence. Years ago, Providence was the site of his first great love and first great heartbreak—and maybe, just maybe, he'll look her up when he's back in town...

Part page-turning thriller, part homage to film noir, and dazzling in its insight into the often desperate desires of the human heart, Her Last Affair is a tense and atmospheric novel of love lost and found again.

Bestseller Searles (Help for the Haunted) explores the entwined fates of three apparently unconnected individuals in this melancholy work of psychological suspense. Retired nurse Skyla Hull’s adulterous husband died a year ago, but she waited until macular degeneration stole her sight to seek a tenant for the vacant cottage on her upstate New York property. Skyla rejects multiple applicants for petty reasons before British divorcé Teddy Cornwell charms her into renting him the place sans background check. In Florida, unhappily married empty nester Linelle Durfort feels unmoored after losing her job teaching art, so when former flame Teddy reconnects via social media, she takes her husband’s prized Camaro and heads north for a surprise visit. And while staying in Providence, R.I., for a freelance writing gig, failed novelist Jeremy Lichanel decides to look up Maryanne Popadowski, a woman who spurned him 20 years earlier. What initially seems like an aimless triptych of character studies coalesces into a tense, intricately woven tale of heartbreak, retribution, and redemption. Lisa Jewell fans will be well satisfied. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary.

In Searles's (Help for the Haunted) suspenseful mystery, listeners are introduced to seemingly unrelated characters. First, there's Skyla, a blind widow who yearns for closeness from her new tenant, Teddy, while she dwells on her late husband's infidelities. Next is Linelle, who was Teddy's first love many years ago but is now unhappily married and simply bored with life. Finally, listeners meet Jeremy, a bitter writer who hopes to get a second chance at love with a woman who broke his heart once before. Initially, the plot is slow during character building; most of the characters are not exactly charming, which adds to the dullness. However, the characters share commonalities of harboring secrets, alter egos, and strong desires to be loved. Narrator Jane Oppenheimer gives an amazing performance bringing these characters to life, particularly Teddy and Skyla. She reads Teddy's character with a deep British accent that is quite distinct and intriguing, whereas Skyla is performed with a blunt, croaky voice that becomes convincingly agitated and upset. VERDICT Worth a listen for those up for a unique mystery that is out of the ordinary.--Lacey Webster
